Starting a business is thrilling—but let’s be honest—it can also feel scary.
When I launched my business, I didn’t know much about running a business. I was great at marketing, and I had ideas, energy, and a mission. I also had a long list of questions:
- Where do I start?
- How do I form an LLC?
- How do I do contracts?
- How do I do a business plan and financials?
- How do I find funding, build a strategy, and stay compliant?
Thankfully, I discovered an entire ecosystem of free resources built specifically to support business owners like me—and you. These tools helped me lay the foundation, connect with experienced mentors, and access smart guidance that has become invaluable. I learned a LOT in the past two years.
Whether you’re thinking about starting a business or are already in the trenches of building one, here are the resources that made a difference for me:
SCORE Get matched with an experienced business mentor for free. My SCORE mentor helped me work through pricing, contracts, a business plan, financials, and no-cost bookkeeping software.
U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) SBA offers free templates, checklists, funding advice, and guidance on licenses, compliance, and disaster recovery. It’s a treasure trove.
Small Business Development Centers (SBDCs) I worked with my local chapter in Cleveland via Urban League of Greater Cleveland, where I got help with financial projections, strategy, and my WBE certification.
JumpStart Inc. If you’re in Ohio, JumpStart offers business assistance, access to funding, and networking events tailored to high-growth startups. And they have lots of virtual sessions and information on their website for those not in the area.
APEX Accelerators Formerly known as PTAC, APEX helps small businesses navigate government contracting—from certifications to finding opportunities. My coach helped me register my business with Ohio and the federal government. He also guided me through a capability statement and project profiles.
You don’t have to go it alone. These organizations exist to help you start strong, grow wisely, and stay sustainable. I’ve leaned on their expertise, tools, and people—and I encourage you to do the same.
Got questions about these resources or how I used them? Just message me. I’m always happy to help. If you know someone thinking of starting a business, please share this blog with them—it might be the support they need to overcome the fear.
